One Hero, The People 2020

In honour of the 60th birthday of the 1960 insurrection in Algeria

Directed by Mathieu Rigouste

One Hero, The People (Un Seul Héros, le Peuple) tells the story of a victorious popular uprising. In 1960, facing militarized repression, Algeria’s working-class populations—with women and children sometimes on the front lines—surged forth from shantytowns and segregated neighborhoods. They thwarted the counter-insurgency and upended the colonial order. It is also the story of oppressed bodies liberating themselves through dance.
